New vehicle for the studio.

1979 Grumman OlsonLast night I went out and bought a 1979 Grumman Olson GMC 30 Step Van for the studio. She has a new transmission, an engine with less that 5,000 miles. She needs a little love and tenderness but still has many good years of service ahead of her.

The drive home was a little dicey at times. There is about 8″ of play in the steering and the breaks are really spongy. Beyond that, I had not driven a 4 speed manual since I was 18 (That was over 20 years ago). All in all, I am happy with the purchase and will be working on this old girl for most of the summer.

Some thing that need work; This will get me a good start.

  • She needs a bath
  • Steering
  • Brakes
  • side doors need tightened up
  • all door handles need replaced
  • Bumpers need straightened out
  • Shelving needs to be removed

Once I get done with her, she will be a mobile office, camper and wet plate dark room. She will also be key in moving us to Portland, Oregon. The one thing I wanted, that was not met by this vehicle, is a diesel  engine. I am not going to cry too much over that. For now, I must go get some coffee and finish waking up.

IR Erotic Project, Making Progress.

rosesThis weekend, I had my second shoot for the IR Erotic project. I want to thank Niki for her participation in the project and I look forward to working with her again!

This is one of my personal, and on going, photo projects that I am aiming for publication and gallery showing. The premise is simple, erotic imagery that is photographed in infrared. To the left is one of my favorite images from Friday night’s the shoot.

I have been shooting in infrared since 2000. Most of this has been analog photography. Only, with in the last 5 years have I been shooting infrared in digital. While I still love to shoot what is left of my IR Film, I am working with a modified canon 5D Mark II. This camera will only shoot in infrared now.

You can follow my projects here: Personal Photography Projects

If you are local to the Indianapolis Area and wish to participate in the project as a model; Please do not hesitate to contact me.

Rock that has been sliced.

Since December 26th, I have been feeling a bit trapped in the house. I have cleared the drive way a number of times only to have more snow dump on it. The upside is that I have been able to work on a number of projects from the home studio. Primarily, I have been working on the Hidden Worlds Project. This is an exploration in extreme Macro Photography.  One of the rules I have set up for this project is that I am not aloud to photograph Bugs or flowers.

So far, I have not had too much of a difficult time finding subject matter to photograph, the hard part is focusing and lighting.

Focus: This is extremely difficult with the Canon MP-E 65 mm macro lens. Why? Well there is no focus ring on this lens; you are focusing entirely by changing the distance from the lens to the subject. This does not seem so difficult until you realize that a single milometer can throw you out of focus; Slight body movements can destroy the shot (as well as any floor shake when using a tripod).

Lighting: I am currently using LED lighting for my set-ups; This has proven to be problematic. The current lights do not have enough output for me to shoot at ISO 200, F16, 1/60th of a second. The settings that I am having to settle for at the moment are ISO 5000 (Yes, Five Thousand), f/16, 1/30th a second. Have tried LED Work Lights as well as two Fotodiox PRO 312AS LED lights.

At 5000 ISO, I am working with a fair deal of grain/noise in the image. The current options are to fight the grain or to work with it. In the posted examples I have chosen to work with the grain,  and in some cases I have actually amplified the grain in post production.

I hope that everyone had a good holiday season and that your new year is starting off great! Take care everyone.

Latest Photo From Hidden Worlds

H22A2609-EditThe Hidden Worlds project is coming along slowly but surely. This afternoon, I took one of my bismuth crystals into the studio and took a few photos.

Earlier in the year, I posted a project for funding to www.indiegogo.com. Unfortunately, I did not find any one to buy into the project. This means that I am working at my own pace to complete the project in which I hope to self publish. Hidden Worlds is all about the limitations of our vision and our inability to see what is right in front of us. In short, it is a lot like not being able to the trees through the forest. This project is an attempt to take the viewer beyond the limits of our visions and into these ‘Hidden Worlds.’ The short description is that this is all about extreme macro photography.

I have heard time and time again that the Canon MPE-60, designed for macro photography,  is a difficult lens to master; I could not agree more. While this is a fantastic lens, it is a beast to work with. There is no focus ring on the lens; You focus by distance. This means that hand held shots are extremely difficult and long exposures are extremely hard to perform in a house that is over 100 years old and lacks stable floors. That being said, I may have to move this operation into the [I.F.] Studio where I have concrete floors. The attached photo was taken using a monopod to eliminate some movement while obtaining some control of focus.

Hidden Worlds – Project

Hidden Worlds – Project

On Sunday August 19, 2012, I kicked of a campaign to fund a project I have been wanting to do. Hidden Worlds is all about the limitations of our vision and our inability to see what is right in front of us. In short, it is a lot like not being able to the trees through the forest. This project is an attempt to take the viewer beyond the limits of our visions and into these ‘Hidden Worlds.’

Clicking on the going to this link (http://igg.me/p/207341?a=524109), you will take you directly to the project and will give more detail on how to help fund this project. In funding this project, you will have the opportunity to obtain prints from the project in various formats. I know that not everyone has the money to help, but you can assist in making this project come to pass by simply sharing and spreading the word.
